Judy H. - Small is the New Big - Miniature Art

Image
Small is the New Big Judy Hierstein Sept 5, 2025 First, to whet your appetite: Tiny Things https://www.facebook.com/share/r/14Hvm8TF21W/?mibextid=wwXIfr Next, meet our artist: Rachel Spelling studiospelling.com Rachel writes: “ In case you’re new here, here’s the background to this piece in a nutshell. In 2020, during the first Covid 19 lockdown, I shrank my work, and went from painting huge walls in grand houses to tiny walls on paint charts. This is a print of the original full Farrow and Ball colour chart where it all started. For me the whole project is very much wrapped up in the lockdown - it was a time when our experience of the outside world had to sit in the dreamworld of our imagination. The images I painted are full of mystery and suggestion. They are like tiny snippets of a film or lines from a book. They hint at other places and moments. Imagined worlds. And the paintings are tiny. The pandemic made all of our worlds shrink and the walls of our home took...

Contour Line Drawings - Instructor Linda D. State of Maine retired Art Teacher

Image
Contour Line Drawings Materials needed: Several sheets of plain paper Ball Point Pen Tape to hold paper in place Optional: Markers Colored Pencil Crayons Contour Drawing is a basic drawing skill. ( I will try to attach some You Tubes) I will explain more and demonstrate during the zoom session. We will be observing and drawing hands. First we will make some “blind” contour line drawings. Then we will practice the skill with just occasional peeks at the paper. The purpose of this exercise is to work on eye/hand co-ordination. The resulting drawings usually look a bit abstract or awkward. But in the world of visual art making a pretty picture is not always the goal and sometimes an “awkward” drawing can be quite powerful. You may choose to work the entire time making line drawings 0r you may also add shading and/or color to the line drawings. Below is an example. After drawing with a pen I used a marker to darken the lines and then added shading with colored pencil. I introduced so...

Loosing Your Marbles - with Judy H

Image
Loosing (losing) My Marbles Judy Hierstein Aug8, 2025 First, a little frivolity: Seniors with Style www.facebook.com/reel/1753661019364665 Next, a compelling artist: Emily Kame Kngwarreye (1910 - 1996) www.facebook.com/reel/1100605321396259 And last, the Marble Project: Loosing (Losing?) your Marbles! Facebook Demo: www.facebook.com/reel/9953370664728032 You will need: Watercolor paper (the smoother the better, ink works better than on rough) India ink or liquid acrylic (black) and small container to wet the marbles Marbles (3-5) small (or beads, or anything that rolls around) Old naked frame (to keep the marbles in line) Painter’s tape Hair Dryer Watercolors, or markers, or watercolor pencils A few tips: Smooth paper a little larger than I used, so the marbles can roll around better. More than two marbles so lines can move together. I made a round sample using a spring form pan. I wonder if you could use smaller beads and cookie cutters? I inked a paper that already had some loo...

Mary Jane - Leader of project "Sandpaper Art"

Image
Sandpaper Art - Friday July 25th Leader: Mary Jane B SANDPAPER:  Karen just found 9 x 11  2000 grit sandpaper at her True Value hardware.  I did more online searching and found 9" x 11"  at Harbor Freight - 5 sheets for $5.29;   Ace Hardware - Norton Sandwet  $6.99;   Amazon - Lot fancy, 30 sheets 17.99;  Zoro grit 15 sheets $9.79,  and Netflum pk of 18 sheets grits 2000-10,000  $28.14. Home Depot and Lowes also have at least one brand 9 x 11  If you have already gotten the sandpaper  don't worry .  I really think the smaller size paper is fine for this project, then you can get larger sheets later if you want to work bigger.  (I also found out that coarser grits are used by pastel artists.) BLENDERS:  or TORTILLIONS not exactly the same things, but similar.  Val asked me about these.  I learned a lot more!!  Amazon sells all sorts of them packaged with other stuff, sometimes,...
